One Year On: The Day Tragedy befell Ospoly Medical Centre.

The Vandalized Health Centre.

I just Ieft Church for the new month prayer that day and as I got to my hostel at Ladoja, I saw some of my hostel mates saying they were going for a protest in respect to Aminu Sheu's death due to a defunct mode of operation of the school's Health System.

I haven't been a fan of protests really but hearing the death of Aminu Sheu due to the poor health system on campus broke my heart. I as well wanted to join the protest but I decided to get myself in order before leaving for the protest that fateful day.

I remember staying in my room at State House, Ladoja and got reports that Students had burnt the Health Centre. I looked through my door and saw flames of fire and instantly, I thought, Ah, our school will surely be closed down for months!

I was writing my HND final exams and already had plans to finish in June but, fate had its own way. Who cares about Exams anyway when a precious life of a student is on the line.

I never understood how such protest could happen and I thought, it was the poor mindset of the Ospoly Students that was to be blamed but looking at what's going on The United States of America right now, I now understand better. When someone dies through a system that is defunct, the people are always ready to fight for their rights and in all fairness, that was what Ospolites did on June 1st, 2019.

The Vandalized Health Centre.

Oh well, many people were blamed for the incidence. The Students Union was saddled with blame and the executives were summoned for several meetings. Dudu, The 2018/2019 Faculty of Science President was as well blamed and was even labelled as the one who led The Science students to go burn the Health Center.

For a Truth, HOPE and DUDU mainly did what a reasonable Campus Leader would do. Hope being the then Union President rose up to the challenge to call for a protest. DUDU also, being the President of the bereaved Faculty was saddled with the responsibility to fight for their rights. All in all, they both were fighting for their students right.

You see, some things are bound to happen and really, from what I have learnt about the demise of George Floyd in The USA, aggrieved people will always go extra length to fight for what is right and on June 1st, 2019, Ospolites became Heroes that stood up for their rights.

If you check through the Health System on Campus now, it is far better than what was in existence before June 1st, 2019. You could see a standard ambulance now as against the crazy Peugout that was used as an ambulance then(isn't it crazy for a reputable school as such to have used a Car for an Ambulance?).

Dear Ospolites, for a change to happen, there are Heroes that would have to fight for it the hard way. Many people blamed DUDU and HOPE for staging the protest. I myself had another view. I thought, the protest should have been on Monday when Staff would come to school. But, it happened eventually and we all became Heroes of Fate. Through our agony, we brought light to the Campus Health System.

Today, the two major people who led the protest are still receiving punishment from the school. HOPE and DUDU were both suspended for a session due to the protest and whilst their colleagues have gone for NYSC, they are there serving punishment for serving the students. What would you call that? A sacrifice for the good of the students who blamed them? Well, it is up to you.
Hope and Dudu.

Conclusively, for a system to be better, there would be Heroes who would have to sacrifice lots of things...

The Refurbished Health Centre.

Aminu Sheu sacrificed his life (a very sad thing to happen).
Students Leaders sacrificed their time which has impact on their life's pursuits.
Ospolites sacrificed their money (remember the 10000 reparation fee?)

All in all, we fought a good fight and now, we could say we could see the result of our fight.

May the Soul of the departed one rest in tranquility. Amen.
