- What every students must know before leaving school
Back in the 90s getting a job was as easy as knowing Ospoly Main Gate, jobs were always available especially if you were exceptionally brilliant.
Coming to Nigeria of Today, it is no hidden fact that the rate of employment keeps 'soaring high like an eagle' and if not properly contained could soar higher than an eagle. The painful aspect is that many of Nigeria's students in tertiary institutions are still having the old thought that 'Jobs are still available.'
True to the fact, Jobs are still available but you have to prove yourself to earn it as you can't get it on a platter of gold as it use to be back then.
Today's post is about letting students know what they must put in place before leaving the Tertiary institution.
1. You wouldn't be taught everything: There is even a school of thought that believes that all what we learn in school do not work in reality. There are some things you have to know on your own. For example, schools wouldn't teach how to reason. You improve on your own.
2. Learn how to write: There have been regular complain of how only a handful of Nigerian students can communicate easily in writing. Now that you are still in school, brush up your writing skill. Nobody will employ someone that doesn't know the meaning between I am an Am. Do you?
3. Sharpen your spoken English: This is an essential skill, no matter how bad your English is, tertiary institutions are where you can speak out and everyone would laugh but it is better than to be laughed at by an Employer!
4. Build your confidence: There are some students that find it hard to speak to 10 students without crashing. Why? It is not because they don't have any to say but they get scared by the eyes they perceived to be scary. Work on your confidence.
5. Build a brand around your self: this one is really wide as it encompasses everything about you. Start build your brand like a 'Pro'. Have a personal email with a professional outlook, some emails like 'SexQueen@gmail.com, Big manna@yahoo.com' should be avoided. Build your online person, get to know the latest things in vogue. Don't just remain at that local level.
6. Be Versatile: Many of us believe in Specialization in one's field but the actual truth that will help is to know some basic things in other fields as this will help broaden your knowledge.
We do hope you put this into action as part of your New Year resolution as you resume back to school.
Welcome back.
